Another Roster Move

The Phillies announced earlier this afternoon that they have reassigned right hander Andrew Carpenter to Reading and have recalled lefty reliever Fabio Castro from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Carpenter pitched one scoreless inning in his Major League debut against the Mets last night at Citizens Bank Park in the Phillies 6-3 loss.

He had a 9-11 record at two minor league levels in the organization.

Castro is returning to the Majors for the first time since 2007. He has also pitched for the Texas Rangers of the American League.

The Phillies acquired the lefty from Texas in 2006 for Daniel Haigwood and had to keep him on the 25-man roster or offer him back to the Chicago White Sox because he was a Rule 5 pick by Texas on December 8, 2005.

Haigwood was acquired from the White Sox in the Jim Thome trade with Aaron Rowand and Gio Gonzalez. All three are now out of the organization. Rowand is with the Giants and Gonzalez is with the A’s after being traded back to the White Sox with Gavin Floyd for Freddy Garcia prior to the 2007 season. He was traded to the A’s by the White Sox for Nick Swisher prior to the 2008 season. On another side note, Haigwood was traded again in April of 2007 to the Boston Red Sox for Scott Shoemaker by the Rangers.

Castro has pitched for both Reading and Lehigh Valley in 2008 and will join the team in Chicago for the four game set with the Cubs.

In 2006 Castro posted a 1.54 ERA in 16 games for the Phillies. He allowed only 4 earned runs in 23.1 innings pitched. He also had one save in two chances. He pitched 17-plus scoreless innings in relief before giving up a run after being acquired by the Phillies.

He struggled with the Phils in 2007, pitching in 10 games and compiling a 6.00 ERA, including one start.

At Reading this year he posted an 8-2 mark with a 4.40 ERA in 27 games. He pitched in only three games at Lehigh Valley, going 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA.

Castro becomes the third lefty reliever in the Phillies vaunted bullpen and his callup is more than likely a result of the 13 inning game against the Mets on Tuesday in which every Phillies reliever was used.

Carpenter pitched a scoreless inning on Wednesday and saved at least one arm from action. Castro will more than likely be asked to do the same if the Phillies need a long-man this weekend against the Cubs or to save the arms of Scott Eyre and J.C. Romero in lefty versus lefty situations.

In his career, Castro is 0-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 30 games, including one start. He has logged 43.2 innings, struck out 32 while walking 26.
