Tough Loss and a Trade

Thursday night was one to forget for the Phillies and their bullpen.

Starter Cole Hamels went seven strong innings, allowing only one run, but for the secons straight night the bullpen blew the lead in the late innings.

The Mets had the night off which meant that a win for the Phils would have tied them for first place in the NL East.

Ryan Madson and Chad Durbin could not hold a three-run lead in the bottom of the 8th.

Madson began the inning and served up a leadoff pinch hit homerun to Mike Fontenot and then allowed two more hits. He was removed before recording an out.

Durbin walked a batter and then served up a go-ahead and the eventual game winner to Aramis Ramirez…a grand slam.

J.C. Romero came in and finally put an end to the bleeding.

Hamels allowed five hits in seven innings. The bullpen allowed five runs in one inning of work. Two nights in a row the bullpen has now blown important leads. The Phillies are now 1 game behind the Mets in the East.

In other news; it has been reported that the Phillies are in the process of acquiring left handed hitting infielder/outfielder Matt Stairs. Stairs was designated for assignment on Thursday by the Toronto Blue Jays and is beingĀ  replaced on the roster by Travis Snider, one of the Jays top prospects

Stairs will replace outfielder Geoff Jenkins, who was placed on the disabled list earlier this week for the team’s stretch run.

A roster move will have to be made to accomodate Stairs when he arrives in Chicago. The trade needs to be completed before Monday for Stairs to be eligible to play in the playoffs.
