Phils Win!!
The Phillies built up a 5-1 lead on Saturday afternoon and actually held on to it this time.
They came away with a 5-2 win over the league leading Cubs to at least keep pace with the Mets in the race for the East division title.
J.C. Romero came into the game in the bottom of the 8th to relieve Myers with two on and no one out. He wound up striking out the side.
Brad Lidge came on in the ninth and recorded a 1,2,3 inning for his 32nd save in as many chances. He picked up two strikeouts in the inning.
Brett Myers picked up the win after pitching seven-plus innings, allowing one run on 11 hits and striking out 8. He walked none.
Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth hit homeruns for the Phillies, two of them from Werth. Werth picked up four RBIs on the day. It was Howard’s league leading 37th homerun of the season.
Other News and Notes:
- The Phillies completed the trade for veteran left handed hitter Matt Stairs on Saturday afternoon. They will send a player to be named later to the Toronto Blue Jays. Stairs will wear number 12. He is under contract for the 2009 season at $1 million. The Phillies will send the player to be named after the conclusion of the World Series.
- On Saturday the Phillies also announced that they had released veteran right handed pitcher Kris Benson. Benson was trying to make a comeback to the Majors and had been toiling in the Phillies farm system all season long. He was 1-6 with a 5.78 ERA with Class-A Clearwater and Class-AAA Lehigh Valley. During his rehab stint with the Phillies Benson was bothered by groin inuries and biceps tendinitis.
- Rosters expand on September 1st so expect the Phillies front office to call-up a variety of prospects to audition for spots on the team next season and players who can help with the current stretch run for a second straight division title.
