1/2 Game in the East!
The Mets are choking again and the sounds can be heard from New York all the way down I-95 to Washington D.C.
With the Nationals hosting the Mets for an important four game set, the Phillies begin play on Tuesday night in Atlanta against the Braves.
The Nationals are in prime position to play the role of spoiler for the Mets but the Braves are in the same position against the Phillies.
On Monday night, the second straight September collapse for the Mets got into full swing. They came into the game with an uncomfortable one game lead over the Phillies in the East and left the ballpark with a slimmer 1/2 game lead after losing to the Nats 7-2.
Pedro Martinez struggled in his six innings of work allowing four runs on eight hits while walking four.
The Mets beleaguered bullpen wasn’t much better as Duaner Sanchez allowed three runs on two hits, one of them a homerun to Elijah Dukes, in only 1/3 of an inning pitched.
This series is not only huge for the Mets but also the Phillies. If the Phils can take two of three from the Braves, or even sweep, then they are in great shape in the East and in the Wild Card going into their final nine games of the season (six at home).
The Phillies send veteran Jamie Moyer to the hill on Tuesday night against Braves rookie James Parr who has yet to allow a run in two career games (both starts) this season. He has faced the Nationals and the Rockies.
