What a Game 1!!

Published by Jim Vassallo at 11:17 pm under Games, General Baseball, NLCS, Playoffs Edit This

The Phillies and Dodgers began their best of seven NLCS on Thursday night at Citizens Bank Park and what a game one it was!

The Phillies prevailed over the Dodgers 3-2 at a raucous ballpark that rocked South Philly.

Manny Ramirez doubled in a run in the top of the first and the Dodgers second run scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth

Cole Hamels pitched seven innings of two run baseball and kept the Phillies offense within reach. He struck out 8 en route to his second consecutive playoff victory of 2008.

In the bottom of the sixth the fireworks began for the Phillies. Shane Victorino reached first and then went to second base on a throwing error by shortstop Rafael Furcal and Chase Utley stepped to the plate.

He hit his first postseason homerun of 2008 to tie the game at two.

Pat Burrell came up two batters later and deposited a line drive into the left field seats for a 3-2 lead.

Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless 8th and Brad Lidge came on for a 1,2,3 save in the ninth to preserve the win.

The Phillies lead the best of seven series 1 game to 0.

Brett Myers will take on Chad Billingsley at 4:35pm Friday at the ballpark. Billingsley was 16-10 in 2008 and Myers was 10-13 in 2008. He dominated the Brewers in game two of the NLDS last week in the Phillies 5-2 win.

For yet another game the Phillies did not have to pry deep into their bullpen, which will be well rested for tomorrow’s game.

Madson threw only 10 pitches, 7 for strikes and Lidge threw only 13 pitches, 9 of them for strikes.

The Phillies now have the upper hand in the best of seven series heading into game 2. It was imperative for the Phillies to win game one, especially since it was at home. The Phillies have now won three straight home playoff games in the 2008 postseason. They are 1-1 on the road.
